Mazie was writing on her clipboard when I jumped into the cab. She looked up, and stuffed it down next to her seat.

"All set?"

I took one more glance at the house.

"Yeah. Let's go."

She jammed it back into first, and let the clutch out.

The rain pounded on the windshield.

Remember that scene in "It's a Wonderful Life"? You know, where Clarence, the angel, asks Jimmy Stewart to help him earn his angel's wings, and Jimmy says…

"Sure, sure. How?"

…and Clarence says…

"By letting me help you."

Picture this.

It's nighttime on the highway. The rain comes down in sheets.

The delivery truck pulls to the side of the road, to drop you off.

You pull your bag down, thank Mazie one more time, and stand there, in the rain, as she waves and pulls away.

I was soaked to the skin by the time I'd walked back to the house.
