Andrew Sullivan responds to a reader today with a deeply honest and reasonable explanation for his early support of the war.
His response, which you should read here, gives me two thoughts for members of Congress:
Don't be afraid to say you made a mistake when you supported the war early on. None of us knew how little this administration could be trusted at the time. It's far better to say you goofed, and then stand against this obscene war, than to feel you have to go on supporting it, when the country knows better.
Perhaps you should consider passing a law, or even a constitutional amendment, which automatically puts a sunset period on any law passed in a time of national crisis, in order to protect future congresses from enacting laws which undermine our democracy.
